During the last week of August in Montepulciano you can enjoy the typical Tuscan tradition of the “Bravio delle Botti”. This event is a challenge among the 8 districts of Montepulciano. The winner of this challenge will get the particular painted drape.

Each district has to roll an empty wine barrel with approximately of 80 kilos weight up a 1800 meters long road climbing up the central village road. The challenge takes place trough the typical curved street of the historical town until the dome of Montepulciano. The persons which roll the barresl are called “spingitori”. For each district there are 2 spingitori.

The word “Bravio” indicate the premium that it’s given to the winner. It’s a drape that represent the saint patron of the town. It was used to be scarlet.

The wine barrel is a really important symbol for Montepulciano. They are fundamental to the aging process of the “Vino Nobile” of Montepulciano.
