The “borgo” – which means hamlet in Italian – preserves all of its original characteristics which date back from the 13th and 14th centuries. The alleys with its fired bricks and stone buildings, the home of Boccaccio, author of Decameron, the church where he has been buried, the “Pretorio” Palace, seat of local government since then till these days, all together create the ideal location for a splendid wedding.
Via Boccaccio, the main street, crosses the hamlet passing through Boccaccio’s house, the Church that holds his thumb, many cafes, wine shops and pizzerias, till you reach the imposing Town Hall – the “Palazzo Pretorio”. Built in the 12th century like a castle connected to the defence fortress in the back, this building represents the centre of the local power since then. Today it is possible to visit the prison, the hearing room, the archives, the chapel and the local vicars accommodations.
In the façade of the Pretorio Palace, you see many coats of arms, each one which belonged to one of the families of each local vicar who ruled and lived in Certaldo. Inside the building and the adjacent Church of San Tommaso is possible to admire many frescoes and sinopias (a technique used to draw with red earth pigment the drafts of a fresco, used until the end of the 1500’s only) from the 15th and 16th centuries.
The Church dates back from the 13th century. It is no longer consecrated for Catholic ceremonies, so it is possible to organize exhibitions, concerts and other events in there. According to the couple who is willing to get married, its is possible to celebrate a non-Catholic symbolic ceremony inside this old Church. The important master piece in this Church is the “Tabernacolo dei Giustiziati” – Tabernacle of the Executed – from Benozzo Gozzoli (painted from 1464 to 1465).
The Town Hall hides an internal courtyard which walls are all decorated with medieval coats of arms, frescoes, apparent fired bricks and arches. The location is beautiful for the celebration of a civil ceremony. For more information about Palazzo Pretorio call +39 0571661219.
The religious ceremony can be organized in one of the many local churches of Certaldo, if you are looking for a Catholic ceremony. Inside the “borgo”, there is the Church of Saint Jacopo and Filippo, the one where probably Boccaccio has been buried. There are many others right outside the hamlet, with easy way to Certaldo taking the suggestive funicular to get to the town centre.
In the internal court yard of Palazzo Pretorio can take place a religious ceremony of any kind. In Italy, a religious ceremony can be made in any place, it is enough the bride and the groom arrange the respective representative willing to come and celebrate their wedding right there. Besides, the court yard gives access to the ancient Fortress from where is possible to admire a stunning panorama of the surrounding countryside.
There are many local cafes, wine shops and restaurants, in particular the central café of Certaldo Alto which makes this charming artistic cappuccino. The restaurant offers a large room where is possible to arrange for the dinner party, and has an open terrace in the back for those who prefer an outdoor buffet.
